Playing With Attachment Theory and Research:
Relevance to Clinical Formulation and Process… Pros, Cons, Nons?
Presenter: Susan C. Warshaw, Ed.D., ABPP
The evolving body of research emanating out of attachment theory supports the importance of relational processes in development, and adds to our lexicon some new developmental constructs which may prove useful to our clinical understanding. The question remains for each of us, as to whether and in what way new developmental findings impact clinical process. Beginning with a brief overview of the evolution of attachment theory, research and key constructs such as “mentalization,” Dr. Warshaw will challenge us to think about the way we use new developmental formulations in our treatment of adults. Through two treatment vignettes, she will demonstrate the relevance of developmental theory to her understanding of the clinical material, as well as raise key questions as to its use in the treatment process.
Susan C. Warshaw, Ed.D., ABPP is an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor and supervisor of psychoanalysis at the NYU Postdoctoral Program where she joined Emmanuel Ghent as the first co-chair of the Relational Track. She is on the teaching faculty within the Relational Orientation, and the Trauma Specialization. She is currently on the teaching and supervisory faculties of The Mitchell Center for Relational Studies and The William Alanson White Institute, Child and Adolescent Training Program. She is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Infant, Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy and was Co-Editor with Neil Skolnick of the book Relational Perspectives in Psychoanalysis (Analytic Press). Trained by Mary Main in the Administration and Coding of the Adult Attachment Interview, Dr. Warshaw has, for fifteen years presented at numerous conferences and workshops, exploring the Rapprochement between Attachment Theory and Psychoanalysis, in particular comparing and contrasting Attachment and Interpersonal Perspectives in approaching various clinical topics.
