PSYCHOSOMATIC PATHOLOGY:Theory & Practice for Analysts & Therapists Muriel Gold Morris, M.D.

Thursdays, 7:45 – 9:15 pm, January 24 – March 14, 2013, (8 Sessions), Fee $200
Course Meets at Dr. Morris’ Office: 49 East 96 St., Apt. 19B (corner of Madison Ave.)

Since the work of the first psychoanalysts, starting with Freud and Groddeck, it has been noted that early family pathology and psychic conflict have contributed to the causation and maintenance of many forms of physical illness for which medical treatments alone have proved inadequate. In a case and lecture format, this course focuses on how applying psychoanalytic methods can lead to an amelioration of these conditions. The effects of pathogenic early environments and the actions of primitive mental mechanisms will be discussed. Readings will draw on the work of psychoanalytic pioneers as well as current day thinkers. Famous psychosomatic cases, among them Charles Darwin and Virginia Woolf, will be described. Reading materials will be provided.

Dr. Morris is the new Chair of the Brill Library Committee at NYPSI. She has taught Psychosomatic Pathology at psychoanalytic institutes throughout the city and has written and lectured on infertility, family pathology, and adoption. In her interest in applied psychoanalysis, she has focused on medical/psychological problems in the themes of great writers.

Educational Objectives:
1)Be familiar with the history of psychosomatic pathology and the stages it has gone through over the years.
2)Be able to recognize that every patient has some psychosomatic symptoms in one form or another, but in many instances they only come to life when the therapist is familiar with how to ask the right questions. The patient’s answers are enlightening and lead to useful therapeutic interventions and strategies.
3)Understand the specific role of family and primitive superego pathology in psychosomatic conditions.
4)Develop confidence in working with these patients, many of whom suffer from the more severe psychiatric diagnoses.
