Knowledge as Fact and Knowledge as Experience: Freud’s Constructions in Analysis by David Bell, M.D.
This paper discusses some issues raised by the Freud’s 1937 paper ‘Constructions in Analysis’ and then moves on to consider more broadly aspects of technique in contemporary psychoanalysis. It is argued that interpretation and understanding are best considered as ‘activities’ rather than ‘events’, distinguishing between knowledge as fact and knowledge as experience. In the former, knowledge is static; in the latter, it is dynamic. Understanding is viewed as an emergent process involving internal shifts within the patient and the analyst, shifts which have the potential to transform knowledge as fact into knowledge as experience. The approach gives emphasis to insight as the source of change and the neutrality of the analyst is of great importance and so remains wedded to a broadly classical perspective.
Dr. David Bell will be joined by Dr. Francis Baudry of NYPSI who will moderate the event and Nasir Ilahi of the Institute of Psychoanalytic Education and NYPSI who will discuss the paper.
Students, academics and clinical professionals in the analytic community are encouraged to attend.
