Presents a screening of
Hitchcock’s Rear Window followed by a psychoanalytic discussion with Peter Dunn, M.D.

Rear Window is a 1954 suspense film by Alfred Hitchcock ranked 45 in the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 greatest American movies. Like many of Hitchcock’s films the plot of Rear Window is about a morally upright man who gets into trouble by giving in to his desire for a cool, blond beauty.

The movie is generally understood as a study of sexual voyeurism and much of the fun of the movie comes from the audience identifying with the voyeur. Less apparent is that the movie expresses a primal scene fantasy in which the relationship between women and men is seen as analogous to the relationship of the Venus Fly Trap and its prey. Hitchcock hides this dark narrative in plain sight using devices that are identical to those used in dreams such as “splitting of the object world” and the nesting of the more disturbing aspects of the central fantasy in the “dream within the dream” world that the voyeur observes.

Following the movie Dr. Dunn will summarize his understanding of the movie and will lead a general discussion.

Students, academics and clinical professionals in the analytic community are encouraged to attend. Members of the general public are also welcome.

Dr. Dunn is the Director for Clinical Services at NYPSI and serves on the Editorial Board of the Psychoanalytic Quarterly. He was formerly on the Boards of JAPA and the Israel Journal of Psychoanalysis, Associate Editor of the International Journal of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and Contributing Editor to Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy. He has received the “Teacher of the Year” award in psychiatry six times from Mt. Sinai, the Charles Brenner Teaching Award from NYPSI and the Edith Sabshin Award from the American Psychoanalytic Association.
