Aby Warburg, The Hopi Serpent Ritual and Ludwig Binswanger, Peter J. Loewenberg, Ph.D.
This paper demonstrates the integral relationship between an individual’s personality and his scholarly and creative work. We hear of Aby Warburg, a distinguished German cultural historian who researched the vestiges of pagan antiquity in Renaissance and Reformation art, who explored the rituals of the Hopis, and who later descended into psychosis and was treated at Binswanger’s asylum, whom Freud inquired about, and was released, in part, when Warburg could present a cogent account of the Hopi “serpent ritual” to the public. This paper explores the interweaving of inner life with creative work and the connections among Warburg, Binswanger and Freud.
Students, academics and clinical professionals in the analytic community are encouraged to attend. Members of the general public are also welcome.
Dr. Loewenberg is Emeritus Professor, University of California, Los Angeles; the Former Dean, New Center for Psychoanalysis, Los Angeles; and the Chair, IPA China Committee.
Join us for light refreshments from 7:30 to 8 p.m.
