A Bitter Harvest: The Centrality of the Oedipal Narrative in the Mind
E. Kirsten Dahl, Ph.D., Steven Wein, M.D., Will introduce Dr. Dahl
Dr. Dahl will discuss how the Oedipal narrative structures the mind. The Oedipal fantasy reflects and consolidates development and also propels developmental progression. This particular narrative is never resolved or relinquished even if much of it may be hidden. Clinical vignettes from children and adults, both male and female, will be used to illustrate this argument.
RSVP admdir@nypsi.org
Students, academics and clinical professionals in the analytic community are encouraged to attend. Members of the general public are also welcome to attend.
E. Kirsten Dahl is a child, adolescent and adult psychoanalyst in private practice in New Haven, Connecticut. She is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Western New England Institute for Psychoanalysis and Chair of their Child Analytic Training Program. Dr. Dahl is also Associate Clinical Professor in the Child Study Center at Yale School of Medicine. She first became interested in the inner world of children when she was a nursery school teacher in New York City and a graduate student at the Bank Street College of Education. She became a Special Fellow in Child Development at the Yale University Child Study Center in 1970 and remained on the faculty until 1993 when she entered full time private practice. She has written on child psychiatric diagnosis, gender development, issues in female development, the mother-daughter relationship and children’s play. Dr. Dahl received her Ph.D. from Yale in 1978.
Steven J. Wein is Associate Dean of Education for Child Analysis and Training, and Supervising Analyst for Adult, Child, and Adolescent Analysis at NYPSI.
Educational Objectives: Participants will understand
1. The oedipal narrative is a fundamental structure of the mind, evolving in complexity over time.
2. As the mind is constructed in the matrix of the mother-child relationship, the most basic oedipal narrative involves the triangle: Infant-mother-mother’s independent mind.
3. The mother’s turning her attention away from the infant to her own thoughts is experienced by the infant as an intrusion into their relationship and becomes the bedrock of the oedipal phantasy concerning the longed for but lost beloved object.
