Dear Colleagues,
With possibly a calmer week politically in the world (I hesitate as those who are superstitious might worry about jinxing it) and a Thanksgiving weekend to give us more time to reflect on both our work and on the world, I want to point out a few of the posts on the international website that drew me in that reflective direction:
1) Joel Whitebook, Ph.D is presenting a paper and NYPSI which those who can will more than likely enjoy attending, “The thesis of this paper is that Freud was Foucault*s nemesis throughout his career, from his early psychological works through his late volumes on the care of the self. Foucault could not successfully refute Freud, but neither could he let go of him. So he was involved in a constant back-and-forth relationship with the founder of psychoanalysis which never found any equilibrium.”
Obviously the struggle continues.

2) Those who recall Judith Wallerstein’s admonitions about divorce about 25 years ago, which then shook the country, will note that the more things change, the more they remain the same, as they read the interview with her about her recently publish book on the subject.

3) two historical posts – a) The Third Table (book category)- please read.
and) William Menninger and American psychoanalysis, 1946*48, by Rebecca Jo Plant , suggest that our psychoanalytic history has a way of repeating itself as a mirror image in our current struggles at APsaA. I was struck by the fact that Menninger’s firm stand for medicalizaton of psychoanalysis was ostensibly motivated by a wish to assure the survival of psychoanalysis at the time – our current thrust in the opposite direction is also driven by the same fear and wish to rescue analysis from obsolescence in a rapidly changing world.

4) Not to leave world/national politics aside, The Fall of the American Empire (Writ Small) By Tom Engelhardt is a scathing commentary on which we psychoanalysts may comment, and James Carville’s ‘ How President Obama Won a Second Term’ is also an interesting read.
