David Brooks turns our gaze to George Vaillant’s long-term study of Harvard men (which included John Kennedy). Brooks distills from Vaillant the effective ingredients for a deeply fulfilling (and even professionally successful life:
“capacity for intimacy combined with persistence, discipline, order and dependability”
These, analysts will recognize, are some ingredients of character, about which we make much. If analysis is to do anything truly rich and different than the Asouk of therapies available today, analysis helps re-sculpt character.
