Vicarious Traumatization, Resilience, and Transformation

Laurie Anne Pearlman, PhD, presenter

In their work with traumatized patients, clinicians find themselves affected by the pain in people’s lives. The negative transformation in the therapist resulting from trauma work has been termed ‘vicarious traumatization’ or VT. This presentation will provide a framework for normalizing and understanding VT, as distinct from countertransference and burnout. The session will include a discussion of ways to address and transform vicarious traumatization.
Laurie Anne Pearlman, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and independent trauma consultant based in western Massachusetts.
