Arctic melt, straying children and Nobel prize in Lit. from Sasha Rolde on IP.net

Dear Colleagues,

Hand in hand with political developments domestically and internationally, our international psychoanalytic website is keeping you informed of the latest in our field and its applications to the world at large.

The posts that stand out to me this week are:

1) Note the programs that relate to political issues:
a) The NCP workshop on sexual boundary violations on Oct. 20 is sure to be topical and interesting to those who can attend.

b) similarly, Why do economists disagree –

2) A number of books are of interest this week, but please note especially the Nobel Prize in Literature winner this year – Mo Yan. I just heard a very moving interview on NPR about him and his books – he is considered to be a Chinese writer who combines in his novels a description of his native culture with the universal human experience.

3) “Last month, climate scientists announced that Arctic sea ice had shrunk to its smallest surface area since satellite observations began in 1979. An ice-free summer in the Arctic, once projected to be more than a century away, now looks possible just a few decades from now. Some scientists say it may happen within the next few years.” Please read.

And we worry about politics!

4) Maureen Dowd’s comments on Obama’s debate performance is interesting.

5) Autistic children “stray” other children “sleep walk”, dementia patients “wander” Do we think that the 3 may be related?

6) An extremely well written, clear paper on the Psychology of Shame by Victor Chu is worth reading for its clarity as well as its universality!

7) though the following posts 1) maternal depression and its effect on baby’s development and 2) do animals get depressed may seem naive and self evident to psychoanalysts, they may IMO have implications in neuroscience, but also be dependent on cultural mores – in current culture the mother is the primary caretaker of a baby, but not in every culture, and in the animal kingdom, it may depend on circumstances and animal – the photo on the web is of a monkey behind bars – hardly a natural state.

This program, with its workshop format, examines the circumstances in which sexual violations develop, typical transference/countertransference dynamics, traumatic sequellae for both*

Posted by Evan Osnos on the New Yorker blog on October 11, 2012

“In awarding the 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature to Mo Yan, the Swedish Academy has recognized one of China*s best-known writers, and also fulfilled one of the Chinese government*s most enduring pursuits: a politically tolerable Nobel laureate. The citation says: *Through a mixture of fantasy and reality, historical and social perspectives, Mo Yan has created a world reminiscent in its complexity of those in the writings of William Faulkner and Gabriel Garc*a M*rquez, at the same time finding a departure point in old Chinese literature and in oral tradition”

X. Textbook of Psychoanalysis

Dr. Jack Drescher*s book Textbook of Psychoanalysis from The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease.

The Textbook of Psychoanalysis could easily be subtitled Just About Anything You Wanted to Know About Psychoanalysis but Were Afraid to Ask. It is a collection of essays written by mainstream members of the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA) as well as contributors who have achieved prominence by training and working in institutes and theoretical traditions outside the APsaA. Refreshingly lacking in polemics and with some rare exceptions (noted below), The Textbook of Psychoanalysis provides an up-to-date snapshot of today*s broad field of psychoanalytic inquiry, theorizing, and treatment.

from The New York Times on October 5, 2012.

A surprising upsurge in the number of scientific papers that have had to be retracted because they were wrong or even fraudulent has journal editors and ethicists wringing their hands. The retracted papers are a small fraction of the vast flood of research published each year, but they offer a revealing glimpse of the pressures driving many scientists to improper conduct.
