Dr. Gazzaniga is a psychology professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Today, in lectures and a new book, he is spelling out another kind of cautionary tale * a serious one, about the uses of neuroscience in society, particularly in the courtroom.

Loretta R. Loeb M.D., a psychiatrist, adult and child psychoanalyst, died unexpectedly at her home at the age of 79. She attended college at Univ. of Illinois completed medical school at Univ. of Pittsburgh where she met her longtime companion, husband, Felix F. Loeb Jr., M.D., Dr. Loeb did her psychiatry residency at the prestigious Western Psychiatric Institute. She explored the psychoanalytic perspective on human behavior in partnership with her husband while living in Pittsburgh, San Diego and finally in Portland.. In Portland, she founded and raised funds to remove tell-tale tattoos from former gang members so that they could reenter society. She studied the origins and resolution of obsessive compulsive disorders in children, the combining of lithium therapy with psychoanalysis in bipolar disorders, and authored many other papers and books. She is survived by her husband, Felix F. Loeb Jr.; her sons, Felix F. Loeb III, Jeffrey A. Loeb; and her daughter-in-law, Marjorie H. Loeb.
This is a book of hope and compassion that describes in detail the analytic processes in the treatment of men whose sexualities are conflicted. The authors eschew political correctness as well as restrictive dogma. They provide their patients with the freedom to choose what they want and need rather than something imposed by the treaters. It is written by two psychoanalysts with many years experience helping men and women. It offers therapists models for empathic and effective treatment and practice.

A Master-Student Collaboration on Psychoanalytic Theory
During the final 12 years of his life, David Rapaport left the Menninger Foundation and moved to the Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge, MA. He kept touch with former students and colleagues in Topeka, but most frequently with the one who had been most inspired to try to follow in his footsteps, Robert R. Holt. In this collection of their correspondence, one can follow the interlocked final and most productive years of a master of psychoanalytic theory, and the early-mature developmental phase of a student who sought to continue and even transcend the master*s work. In them, we see how Rapaport functioned as a teacher and mentor, at the same time treating his younger colleague as an equal whose critique of his own work was to be welcomed and respected.
