Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association Names New Editor-in-Chief

NEW YORK, NY (July 12, 2012) – The American Psychoanalytic Association is pleased to announce that Bonnie Litowitz, Ph.D. has been selected as the next editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA). JAPA is one of the world’s most respected publications in psychoanalysis, offering insightful and broad‐based original articles, ground‐breaking research, thoughtful plenary addresses, in‐depth panel reports,and perceptive commentaries.

Dr. Litowitzhas been on the JAPAeditorial board since 1999 and served as associate editor from 2001 to 2011. Her five-year term as editor-in-chief will officially begin on January 1, 2014; she will have the benefit of a year’s overlap with the current editor-in-chief, Steven Levy, M.D.

Asked about her new role, Dr. Litowitz commented that she is pleased to be taking over the helm at JAPA; she elaborated, saying, “This is such an exciting time for psychoanalysis in America, when innovative ideas are informing new clinical practices. JAPA is the forum for the best of that scholarship, and new technologies are making access and interaction with the journal faster and easier.”

When asked to comment on the appointment, Robert Pyles, M.D., president of APsaA, said,“JAPA has been a thought-leader on psychoanalytic topics for over 50 years and I look forward Bonnie bringing her expertise, vision, and creativity to the editorship.”

Dr. Litowitz has been an associate professor at Northwestern University with joint appointments in the Department of Linguistics and the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.She is on the faculty of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis, an associate professor of psychiatry at Rush Medical School, and in private practice.
