The Efficacy of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: The Talking Cure in the Era of Prozac, Managed Care, and Evidence-Based Practice

Psychodynamic therapy is an evidence-based treatment. Effect sizes are as large as those of other therapies that are promoted as “empirically supported” and “evidence-based,” and patients who receive psychodynamic therapy not only maintain therapeutic gains but continue improving after treatment ends. Research also shows that other therapies may be effective in part because the more skilled practitioners incorporate (often unacknowledged) psychodynamic elements. Dr. Shedler will discuss the seven distinctive features of contemporary psychodynamic treatment, empirical evidence for its benefits, and how it compares to other treatments like CBT and antidepressant medication.

This clinical workshop will focus on psychodynamic case formulation as a roadmap to effective intervention. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of case formulation and its role in contemporary psychoanalytic therapy through the presentation and discussion of a clinical case, live supervision, and role playing. Topics will include psychoanalytic case formulation and treatment planning, developing a treatment focus, and the constructive use of transference and countertransference in deepening the treatment. Dr. Shedler will also discuss the Shedler-Westen Assessment Procedure (SWAP) and its role in psychoanalytic case formulation.
Learning objectives – Participants will be able to:
1. Describe seven distinctive features of contemporary psychodynamic therapy.
2. Define the concepts of effect size and meta-analysis.
3. Describe empirical evidence supporting psychodynamic therapy.
4. Describe the relationship between case formulation and treatment planning in psychoanalytic treatment.
Jonathan Shedler, PhD, is a leading expert on personality, personality pathology, and psychotherapy. His article, The Efficacy of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, has earned international acclaim. Hailed as a contemporary classic, it establishes psychodynamic therapy as an evidence-based treatment. Dr. Shedler is the co-author of the Shedler-Westen Assessment Procedure (SWAP) for personality diagnosis and clinical case formulation. He is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, the Director of Psychology at the University of Colorado Hospital Outpatient Psychiatry Service, and a faculty member at the Denver Psychoanalytic Institute.
Christian J. Churchill, PhD, LP, is a licensed psychoanalyst in private practice in New York City and a professor of sociology at St. Thomas Aquinas College. He is an advanced candidate in the Adult Psychoanalysis Program of the Psychoanalytic Training Institute of the Contemporary Freudian Society, where in 2009 he was awarded the Plumsock Prize for his paper, “Treating the Subject: Toward Common Ground in Psychoanalysis and Ethnography.” He is on the editorial board of the online journal The Candidate: Perspectives from an Evolving Psychoanalytic Community. His book, co-authored with Gerald E. Levy, The Enigmatic Academy: Class, Bureaucracy, and Religion in American Education, was published in 2012 by Temple University Press.

Who Should Attend:
Mental Health Professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, licensed professional counselors, eg, LP’s, LCAT’s, pastoral counselors), and people with an interest in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic thinking and clinical applications.
Continuing Education Credits:
Psychologists: The Contemporary Freudian Society is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education programs for psychologists. CFS maintains responsibility for this program and its content. CE credits are granted to participants with documented attendance and completed evaluation forms. Attendance is monitored. Credit will not be granted to registrants who arrive late, or depart early. It is the responsibility of participants seeking CE credits to comply with the requirements outlined below. Upon completion of these requirements, participants will be given 3.5 CE credits.

The fee for 3.5 CE Credits for Members of CFS and Candidates is $30, and for all others it is $50. If you would like CE credit, please give your email address to the identified person at the end of the program. An evaluation form will be emailed to you. You will receive a PDF via email of your CE credits upon receipt of a hard copy of the completed evaluation form and your check (written to Contemporary Freudian Society).
