Achievement, A Poem by Irene Willis

Achievement

Look of triumph on the anorexic’s face,
subtle swagger as she moves past stove and fridge –
skeletal and needing nothing.

Skeletal, needing nothing. Cats suffice.
The empty place in bed
fills with their warm presence every night.

Filled with their warm presence every night,
she dreams the pleasure of forsaking lust,
pleasuring herself, yet bodiless.

Pleasuring, yet bodiless, she will,
if current plan succeeds, achieve
the ultimate erasure of the self.

Ultimate erasure of the self
ensures all meat disgusts, all bodies’
effluents and touch repel.

Effluents, touch repel, no matter where
they emanate. No human breath,
smell, sound can comfort or appease.

No smell or sound can comfort or appease.
Only in their absence can she rest.
Without is ultimate, its neediness disguised.
