Just as early childhood experience influences the personality of the adult, so too does the early history of a psychoanalytic community influence its contemporary form and future direction. In this event Daniel Benveniste, Ph.D. will discuss the early history of psychoanalysis on the West Coast, with a focus on San Francisco and some of the professional debates and struggles that took place in the early years there. George “Mike” Allison will discuss the early history of psychoanalysis in Seattle, describing the founders and their work and recounting the history of SPSI from one decade to the next.
The Presenters:
Following a residency at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, George “Mike” Allison, M.D. did his psychoanalytic training with the founders of psychoanalysis in Seattle. Later he served for many years in numerous offices of the American Psychoanalytic Association, finally serving as its President from 1990-1992.
Daniel Benveniste, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist practicing in Bellevue. He practiced in the Bay Area for many years and then spent a decade in Venezuela. He has published on psychoanalytic history and various clinical issues and has taught in many graduate programs in the Bay Area and Venezuela.

Learning Objectives
Participants in this event will learn about the founders of psychoanalysis in San Francisco and Seattle and how they shaped psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic training as it practiced today.
Participants in this event will learn about the historical controversies related to the establishment of societies and institutes, the question of lay analysis, the structure of training, and the development of psychoanalytic theory on the West Coast.
Participants in this event will learn how psychoanalytic history is not simply a family scrapbook but rather an essential component of psychoanalytic training and a psychoanalytic identity.
