Freud’s birthday, babies and learning, addiction and more from Sasha Rolde on InternationalPsychoanalysis.net

Dear Colleagues,

On the birthday of Sigmund Freud it is no accident that there are numerous articles related to his life and work, as well as to the Holocaust which cut his work short.

As our spring activities mount and who is winning the baseball games becomes a preoccupation, please take a little time out to read the always interesting articles on the international psychoanalysis website. Please note that for the sake of brevity I am not including previously posted ANNOUNCEMENTS.

My favorites this week are:

1) the confession of a NYC base artist, “Up in Smoke” – honest, and well written

2) Studying minds of babies to learn how we acquire knowledge – please read what our babies are really doing.

3) it seems that bad habits (addictions to drugs, cigarettes, food) is are really a disease not a personality disorder. Though an interesting study, my response is always that whatever we say or do changes the chemistry in our brain, so can this be argued as a semantic problem?

4) Pride and Joy by Kenneth Barish is an excellent parenting primer helping to give insight to parents about their child’s emotional life.

5) Affecting all of us APsaA’s Long March to Inclusion is a “must read”

6) Motherhood vs. Feminism or Attachment parenting vs. working mom – the ultimate ambivalent moment for women – this thoughtful article outlines the dilemma.

7) There are several historical events outlined on this website including books and papers on the holocaust history and Adolph Hitler. One of these is on the fate of the medical school in the Warsaw ghetto, another on the psychology of Adolph Hitler.

8) Note that in the post on erasing painful memories in the science category, psychodynamic treatment is not mentioned.’
