LACAN’S RETURN TO FREUD & ITS CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS

Jacques Lacan is a Parisian psychoanalyst whose clinical theory is little known to many in the U.S., often because his work is rarely translated into English. The clinical field of Lacanian psychoanalysis, however, is one of the fastest growing, extending across Europe, South America, and Australia. Lacan’s ideas concerning the handling of transference, analytic listening, the place of unconscious fantasy, theories of interpretation, and the unfolding of the cure, are valuable additions to understanding our work with patients. This program serves as an introduction to Lacanian clinical ideas and their practical uses for therapists and analysts.
We will overview Freud texts covered by Lacan in his seminars, and Lacan’s discussions of his own theories regarding the mirror stage, the theory of the object, the importance of the death drive, the structuring of fantasy, jouissance, and the end of analysis. We will cover a range of readings, including Freud and Lacan’s commentary on Freud, as well as papers by contemporary Lacanians published in English. We will provide case material for illustration.
Dr. Webster is in private practice in NY and is an advanced candidate at NYPSI. She is on the faculty at Eugene Lang and NYU; and she teaches and supervises externs and interns at both IPTAR and NYPSI. She is the author of The Life and Death of Psychoanalysis (Karnac 2011).
Dr. Lichtenstein is in private practice in NY. He is on the faculty at CUNY’s doctoral program in clinical psychology; founding member of Apres-Coup Psychoanalytic Association; and editor of Division/Review, a quarterly publication on psychoanalysis by Division 39. He has written extensively on psychoanalysis, Lacan, his clinical work with children, art and politics.

Information Regarding CE Credit for Psychologists
Educational Objectives: After taking this course, participants will be able to:
1. identify the ideas of Freud that had an impact on Lacanian clinical theory.
2. have a beginning working knowledge of Lacanian clinical technique and major terminology.
3. discuss through case material the application of these ideas.
4. identify commonalities and differences between Lacan and various American theorists’ s interpretations of Freud and of techniques of clinical listening.
Who Should Attend: Mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and licensed psychotherapists).
