A Psychoanalytic Approach to a Neurobiological Disorder: The Dyadic Treatment of a Toddler with Autism Spectrum Disorder Susan P. Sherkow, M.D.

Dr. Sherkow will present case material from a psychoanalytically-informed treatment of a pre-Oedipal boy diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, emphasizing a psychodynamic understanding of the biological mechanisms contributing to ASD symptomatology in children. Dr. Sherkow will illustrate the impact of ASD on aspects of social, emotional and cognitive development, and show how both a dyadic approach and play therapy techniques can be implemented as crucial additions to a treatment plan for children with ASD.

Susan P. Sherkow, M.D. is a Supervising Analyst in the Child and Adolescent Division of NYPSI and a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Berkshire Psychoanalytic Institute. She is an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and at Mount Sinai College of Medicine.
