(8 Sessions), Fee $160

NEW LOCATION FOR THIS COURSE ONLY
Office of Dr. Morris:  49 East 96 Street, Apt. 19B
(corner of Madison Avenue)

Since the work of the first psychoanalysts, starting with Freud and Groddeck, it has been noted that early family pathology and psychic conflict have contributed to the causation and maintenance of many forms of illness for which medical treatments alone have been inadequate.  Hypochondria, chronic fatigue, gastrointestinal conditions such as eating disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, and colitis, bronchial asthma, infertility, impotence, hypertension, autoimmune disease and many others have fallen into this category.  After a number of years of limited interest within medicine in the psychological underpinnings of these matters, there has been a recent resurgence of attention to them and the value of psychoanalytic therapy for their management and relief. This course will describe the history of this discipline, the work of past and present major contributors, and the way current thinking is developing.  The course will include discussion of clinical material and treatment as well as descriptions of fascinating famous historical cases of Darwin, Jane Austen, Carlyle, Swift, and Virginia Woolf.

Reading materials will be provided.
Dr. Morris is a member of NYPSI and is a course instructor at NYPSI in the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Program.  She is the new Chair of the Library Committee at NYPSI.  She has taught Psychosomatic Pathology to psychoanalysts and psychotherapists at NYPSI, IPTAR, and NPAP and has written and lectured on infertility, family pathology, and adoption.  In her interest in applied psychoanalysis, she has focused on medical/psychological problems in the themes of great writers.
Dr. Goldblatt, a practicing psychiatrist, is co-chairman of the Psychosomatic Study Group at P.A.N.Y. He is a founder of the Society for Liaison Psychiatry, was chief of Consultation-Liaison and Psychosomatic Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital from 1979-1989, and has written on history taking with medically ill patients.

The Extension Committee welcomes mental health professionals, trainees in fields of psychiatry, psychology, and social work, and any members of the community who are interested in psychoanalytic principles.
