Dangerous Method, love & autism, Free Will?, Latency and hormones changes from Sasha Rolde on IP.net

Dear Colleagues,

At the end of this year I am tempted to review the year on the international website but since it would be an impossible task, suffice it to say that we have made an enormous mark for

psychoanalysis globally and are an extremely popular site for visitors from all over the world. I will limit myself to the highlights of this week and give you the menu.

Here are my own choices:

1) the posts on ” A Dangerous Method” are a continued source of thought provoking gems which I hope you will enjoy as much as I have.

2) Navigating Love and Autism is a serious article in the NYTimes – a must read for those interested in growing up with autism.

3) Is neuroscience heralding the end of Free Will. This is of particular interest to lawyers. My son has always maintained that there is no such thing as a free will when told that he could do something if he wanted to. Clearly he knew something about his brain that we didn’t.

Thus this is also of particular interest to child therapists and to psychoanalysts who believe that doing away with resistances will allow individuals to live a “freer” life or to put differently, consciously map their lives – Possibly*..?

4) ERs filled with mentally ill as services in states diminish – where do we come in?

5) Finally, the “Latency years” may not be as quiescent as we thought with brain development and hormone production increasing rapidly.

XXXI. Uncertainty and Countertransference by Robert Tyson

3/85 There are, of course, many ways by which uncertainty may affect the psychoanalytic interaction between analyst and analysand. The nature and quality of that interaction determines whether or not it is a psychoanalytic one, or some other variety, and it ultimately also determines whether it is a process which proceeds, or one which becomes arrested. I will examine some clinical examples of how the analyst’s uncertainty can affect the analytic process through the countertransference, but first I will establish working definitions of countertransference and of uncertainty

XXXIV. Register Now Online for Symposium 2012: On Loneliness Friday, December 30th, 2011

With the the year coming to a close, ask your accountant if you can deduct online registation for this March 2012 event as a 2011 Business or Educational expense.

Loneliness is perhaps one of the most painful affective states a person can experience. It is a subjective experience that most of us have, at some point in our lives, had. It may be experienced as an intense emptiness or solitude, an isolation from others both internal and/or external. Or, it can be experienced as grief; a loneliness in the presence of others. It can be also be understood by its duration (e.g., temporary or chronic) or, as Sartre noted, an essential feature of the human condition. Sartre believed this condition arose from conflict between the need to create meaning in life and the awareness of isolation or nothingness in the universe. For a psychoanalyst this idea might translate into an infantile experience of needing the mother and becoming aware that she is not always available. Chronic loneliness has been linked to physical (e.g., cancer, stroke, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease) and psychological (e.g., depression and schizoid pathology, impaired cognition and personal determination, sleep disturbance, suicide, alcoholism and substance abuse) difficulties. As we can see from the variety of manifestations loneliness is often a complex phenomena in both its etiology and presentation .
