Psychoanalytic Career Paths: A Prospective Study of Recent Graduates
Sabrina Cherry, M.D.
Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Columbia University
Training and Supervising Analyst, Columbia Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research

In 2003, the Columbia Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research began a prospective study of its graduates, designed to describe their practice and career path after analytic training. Dr. Cherry will present the quantitative and qualitative arms of the study and share highlights from the results.  The study describes the career trajectory of analysts who do and do not maintain immersion in psychoanalysis. Striking similarities between these groups suggest that postgraduate immersion may not be a central determinant of ongoing commitment to and involvement in the field. Discussion will focus on understanding the study, describing the professional choices analysts face and considering whether these data compel changes in psychoanalytic training programs.
