PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY with CANCER PATIENTS & their SPOUSES Norman Straker, M.D.
Thursdays, 30 – 8:40 pm, January 19, January 26, & February 2, 2012 (3 Sessions), Fee $90

This course will provide an introduction to psychoanalytic psychotherapy of cancer patients and their families. The first session will address the unique challenges posed by treating cancer patients, including the tendency of the therapist to avoid death anxiety by denying death. The video “On the Edge of Being: When Doctors Confront Cancer” will demonstrate the issues posed by dying cancer patients. The clinical challenges throughout the illness, which are unique to the treatment of cancer patients, will be the topic for the second session.  These include dealing with defenses such as denial and regression, treating dying patients, and managing powerful transferences and counter transferences. Session three will highlight the challenges facing spouses of dying cancer patients, including preparation for death and managing grief and mourning.  A video “The Courage to Survive:  Facing the Loss of Your Soul Mate” will illustrate the treatment of a spouse.
Dr. Straker is Clinical Professor, Weill Cornell Medical Center; Consultant, Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; and Attending Psychiatrist, New York Presbyterian Hospital.  He is on the faculty of NYPSI.
The Extension Committee welcomes mental health professionals, trainees in fields of psychiatry, psychology, and social work, and any members of the community who are interested in psychoanalytic principles.
