THE METROPOLITAN CENTER FOR MENTAL HEALTH AND THE METROPOLITAN INSTITUTE
FOR TRAINING IN PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY
THE TRAUMA OF GROWING UP GAY:   IMPLICATIONS FOR TREATMENT

Saturday, December 3, 2011
Presenter: James M. Holmes, Dr.P.H., L.P.

Fortunately these days-among enlightened psychodynamic therapists-homosexuality isn’t considered an automatic signal of pathology.  Minority sexual orientation is treated as a normal variation of sexual experience.  However, clinical considerations for gay men and lesbians, as among any cultural group, have particular contours.  Patients of non-normative sexual experience undergo developmental passages and environmental stresses that profoundly influence their ego development and psychic structure.  The internal experience of same-sex attraction juxtaposed against familial and societal expectations of conformity to a hetero-normative standard can generate conflict.  This workshop will consider the experience of gay men and lesbians within the processes of trauma and stigma and explore the clinical implications of these experiences. Particular attention will be paid to the potential for countertransference enactments that may revitalize the trauma.  Participants are encouraged to bring their own clinical examples for discussion.
