OPEN HOUSE LUNCHEON & CLINICAL PRESENTATION FOR THOSE CONSIDERING POSTGRADUATE TRAINING: WHEN WORDS HURT
Wednesday, December 7, 2011
1:00 PM – 2:30 PM

Kimberly, a girl of five and a half, began therapy with a history of having been placed in three separate foster care settings: Over the course of treatment, there would be three more placements. During the first six months of treatment, Kimberly spoke minimally. She would routinely enter the therapist’s office appearing sullen and withdrawn: She seemed encapsulated in her own world. The therapist would often ask Kimberly how she was feeling or would attempt to reflect back to her what he imagined she might have been experiencing. All efforts to reach her felt futile to the therapist and were often responded to with folded arms and a shrug of the shoulders. In one exasperated moment, early in treatment, the therapist awkwardly asked, “Where are your words. Where have they gone?” After a long, painful silence, Kimberly quietly replied, without looking up, “I keep them inside…because the words hurt.” The therapist will present an account of his interventions and how, through using art and play therapy, he came to view the patient’s interior world and to understand more intimately her sense of rage, isolation, guilt and despair.
