SCIENTIFIC MEETING: REMEMBERING 9/11
Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 8:00 PM

Susan Coates:

THE IMPACT OF MATERNAL REFLECTIVE FUNCTIONING ON CHILDREN’S REACTIONS TO 9/11:
A COMPARISON OF TWO CASES

In this presentation Dr. Coates examines the impact of maternal reflective-functioning on the development of PTSD symptoms in young children by comparing the symptomatic outcome in two 9/11 cases: one where the mother had highly developed reflective-functioning and another where the mother’s reflective-functioning was temporarily impaired. Both mothers were very traumatized on 9/11/2001: one mother was strolling her baby in the plaza of the Twin Towers when the first plane hit and the other lost her husband when the towers fell.
