Coasting in the Countertransference: The Problem of the Analyst’s Economic Needs
Irwin Hirsch, Ph.D.

Countertransference experience always has the potential to be used productively to benefit patients. However, it is not unusual for analysts to “coast” in their countertransference and to not use this experience to help patients progress toward treatment aims and toward successful termination. In such instances, with some consciousness, analysts (and patients) collude to maintain what might be a mutually comfortable equilibrium. Analyst’s economic needs are an important factor in many such compromises.
