Gail Reed, Ph.D. Discusses
Penis Envy: From Childhood Wish to Developmental Metaphor*
by William L. Grossman, M.D. & Walter Stewart, M.D.
& 2 other papers by Grossman

This session discusses the work of William Grossman, particularly the paper he co-authored with Walter Stewart, which describes the second analyses of two female patients, each of whom presented with manifest envy of men and manifest dissatisfaction with being female.  It describes how interpretations of penis envy in the first analyses led to stalemate, and considers that the first analysts misapplied what the authors call “a developmental metaphor.” In so doing, it delineates two stages of envy, both connected with the recognition of genital difference. One is associated with the oedipal level of development, and the other, present in borderline and narcissistic patients, with problems of identity, narcissistic sensitivity and aggression.  Grossman’s idea about hierarchical and recursive systems of communication within the analyst and within the patient, and between analyst and patient, will be introduced to show how it influences his clinical and theoretical approach.

Because there are two authors, we will look as well at the contemporaneous Grossman of “Discussion of ‘Freud and Female Sexuality’” and because it is a relatively early paper, we will look briefly ahead to the Grossman paper “Hierarchies, Boundaries and Representation in a Freudian Model of Mental Organization.”

In the process we will also encounter “classic” pioneering work by two other members of the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute: Eleanor Galenson and Herman Roiphe.

Dr. Reed is an Honorary Member of NYPSI.   She is also a Training analyst, Supervising analyst, and on the Faculty of the Berkshire Psychoanalytic Institute, the NY Freudian Society, and NPAP.  She is an Associate Editor, Foreign Books, JAPA; and on the Editorial Board, Psychoanalytic Quarterly.
