Description
The Therapeutic Action of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy:
Current Concepts of Cure
Course Directors: Lawrence E. Lifson, MD and Martha Stark, MD

Friday & Saturday, March 25-26, 2011 | 8:30 am – 5:00 pm both days
at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel, Boston, MA

This is the seventh extraordinary two-day conference that will feature many of the most prominent psychodynamic psychotherapists presenting their innovative and evolving ideas about the therapeutic action of psychotherapy. They will offer differing perspectives from attachment, development and resilience to self-psychology, object relations, and relational and contemporary approaches. These approaches will widen the scope of applicability of psychodynamic psychotherapy. A unique feature of this conference will be a case presentation by a senior clinician of an impasse in psychotherapy, followed by three renowned discussants addressing the impasse from their differing clinical perspectives. The overriding intent of this conference will be to deepen and broaden the understanding of the curative process with special attention to the contributions of both patient and therapist in the unfolding of the ‘cure’. The conference will conclude with a Saturday afternoon interactive panel on Baseball and Psychoanalysis that will address the psychoanalytic elements underlying optimizing of player performances and the peak performance factors that produce winning baseball teams.
The educational objectives are to:

elucidate the therapeutic action of psychodynamic psychotherapy;
define the contributions of varying theories to therapeutic change;
recognize the value of differing therapeutic approaches to impasses in psychotherapy; integrate current theories into clinical practice;
and understand the psychoanalytic elements that optimize baseball player performance.
