Ken Corbett: Shifting Sexual Cultures and The Problem and Promise of Psychoanalytic Ideals
When sex brings someone to an analyst it is most often due to a lack or an abundance of desire. It then becomes the analyst’s job to accompany the patient in acts of recollection, mentalization, and repair of that which has gone missing and/or that which feels to be out of control. In the course of such treatments, patients now routinely bring in stories of their sexual lives and practices that include accounts of on-line cruising and hooking-up. One in six relationships (whatever their duration) now begin on-line. In my experience, patients most often seek help with repression and lack in their sexual lives. Be that as it may, one occasionally meets the patient who feels he has lost hold of his sexual life. Frankly, I am always skeptical of such claims, and my skepticism is often borne out, as together, I and the patient, come to understand that this feeling of a loss of control is an expression of shame, the breakdown of repression, or an expression of melancholia. I discuss two cases, and how the consideration of sexual shame, non-normative sexual desires, and the necessity of sexual practice were key to these treatments. I consider how on-line hook-ups afford many things, including a potential space for practice of a sexual life that has yet to be found or formed.
