Mum’s the Word:
Are We Becoming Silent On Masturbation?

Denia Barrett, MSW
President of The Association for Child Psychoanalysis

Discussant:
Leon Hoffman, M.D.

This eloquent and provocative paper explores the trend in contemporary child analytic technique to avoid addressing material related to masturbation. The author invites the reconsideration of the value of timely, tactful exploration of the child’s impulses, fantasies and related conflicts. The analyst’s resistances to open discussion of masturbatory conflicts are discussed along with the limiting effect this may have on the patient feeling fully understood. Clinical examples of analytic work with children from prelatency through preadolescence whose symptoms range from neurotic conflict to more severe disturbances are provided. This paper is relevant to the work of all analysts-adult, adolescent and child.
