The Assessment and Treatment of Abused Adolescents with William Salton at MITPP

THE METROPOLITAN CENTER FOR MENTAL HEALTH AND THE METROPOLITAN INSTITUTE FOR TRAINING IN PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY

THE ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT OF ABUSED ADOLESCENTS
Saturday, April 16, 2011
Presenter: William Salton, Ph.D.

This four-hour workshop reviews the assessment and treatment of adolescents who have suffered physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse. We will first examine the different characteristics of adolescents whose abuse began in the teenage years versus those in which the abuse has occurred during much of their lives. We will then differentiate these symptoms from the “normal” difficulties of adolescence.  Next, we will discuss how symptoms of the abused adolescent may be disguised along with how to assess some by-products of the abuse, such as suicidal and homicidal potential.  Finally, we will present different approaches for beginning to deal with abused adolescents therapeutically (however, teaching strategies for ongoing treatment of abused adolescents goes beyond the time allowed for this workshop).  Clinical case examples as well as characters from literature, film, and music will be used to enhance this presentation.
