Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy of Cancer Patients

This course will provide an introduction to dynamic psychotherapy with cancer patients and their families. In the first session the unique challenges presented by cancer patients including a tendency to deny death and death anxiety in the therapist will be addressed. The video “On the Edge of Being: When Doctors Confront Cancer” will facilitate class discussion. The second session will explore dynamic psychotherapy with cancer patients in detail including:
dealing with denial and regression, managing the transference and counter transference issues and managing terminally ill and dying patients. The challenges facing spouses of cancer patients will be addressed in session three, including techniques for helping them cope during the illness of their spouse and after their death. Managing grief and mourning will be highlighted. A video “The Courage to Survive: Facing the Loss of Your Soul Mate” will illustrate the treatment of a spouse.

New York Presbyterian Hospital. He is on the faculty of NYPSI.
