Googling for Ghosts: A Meditation on Writer’s Block, Mourning & the Holocaust
Sylvia E. Flescher, M.D.
Clinical Instructor, Mount Sinai Medical Center & leader of the residents’ Process groups
Graduate, NYPSI

In this fragment of memoir, the author describes her decades-long struggle with writer’s block and how her voice was over-shadowed by her analyst father, also a writer, but more importantly, a Holocaust survivor. Themes of survivor guilt, incomplete mourning and the transmission of trauma to the second generation are illustrated. A specific and transformative life experience has allowed a final integration resulting in this paper.
