ADOPTION: THE SEARCH FOR MEANING AND IDENTITY
Wednesday, November 17, 2010
1:00 PM – 2:30 PM
Sarah was 4 1/2 years old when she started treatment. She had been placed in foster care and her situation was uncertain. During the 8 years of treatment, she was adopted by her caretaker and struggled to negotiate the normal developmental challenges of childhood. The constant use of splitting was evident in her object relations, fantasies about being abandoned and issues of identity. Diverse family constellations ethnic and racial origins and generational differences made the situation more challenging. As the search for meaning and identity progressed, the original trauma was revived, causing a powerful effect ending in a repetition of the traumatic event through reversal: abandoning the therapist.

PRESENTER: Alexandra Cattaruzza, M.S., L.P. is a graduate, Faculty member and Supervisor of The Metropolitan Institute for Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy’s Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Program.
