The Predisposition to Anxiety,
Part II*
by Phyllis Greenacre
Introduction by Gail Reed, Ph.D.

Greenacres’ 1940 paper is one of those neglected classics which describe her approach to severe pathology. She illuminates the effect of certain traumatic events early in life which influence both physiological and psychological spheres. She then outlines a method of treatment and management of borderline patients combining biological and psychological parameters. Her approach is both educational and interpretive, based on her profound empathy for this disturbed group of patients, and her search for what would stabilize them.

Dr. Baudry is training and supervising analyst at NYPSI. He is also on the faculty at NYPSI, where he teaches a course on post-Freudian object relations theories. He teaches a course on the supervisory process in NYPSI’s Extension Division. He is co-chair of the Works in Progress series at NYPSI.

*(1941) Psychoanalytic Quarterly, 10: 610-638. It can also be found in Greenacre, P., Trauma, Growth, and Personality, Norton 1952 pp 53-83. The paper will be available in the library at NYPSI. Call 212-879-6900 to obtain a copy before the discussion.
