THE PLAY’S THE THING:  TRANSITIONAL PHENOMENA & SHAKESPEARE’S PLAYS

Howard K. Weiner, M.D.
Tuesdays, 7 – 8 pm
September 28 – October 26, 2010
Fee $100 (5 sessions)

We will first elucidate the concepts of the transitional object, transitional space, and transitionality.  We will explore their relationship to sublimation, artistic creativity, romantic love, and psychoanalytic process.  We will look at three of Shakespeare’s best known plays, and use ideas about transitional phenomena to see how concepts of representation, artifice, imagination, and fantasy are developed in these works.  The five classes will be divided as follows:

1) Readiness Is All: Introduction to transitional phenomena & application to artistic process
2) Such Stuff As Dreams Are Made On:
A Midsummer’s Night Dream
3) Trapping the Self:
Hamlet
4) Brave New World:
The Tempest
5) Avenues for Further Inquiry
