This presentation will demonstrate that the fear of dying is a far more common concern than is acknowledged in the psychoanalytic literature. Freud’s theories of anxiety have reinforced the denial of the fear of death. Several new concepts in the treatment of dying patients are recommended including: a more active approach by the analyst that 1) helps the patient “live with uncertainty,” 2) promotes optimal coping, by maintaining a common sense approach to defenses, 3) engages the patient in facing mortality and 4) accepts that the regressive transference occurs independent of the frequency of psychoanalytic visits.

Join us for light refreshments from 7:30 to 8 p.m.
