The Life & Work of Louise Nevelson
Laurie Wilson, Ph.D.

Louise Nevelson spoke often about the lights, shadows and reflections in her work. She was referring both to the formal appearance of her abstract sculpture as well as to some metaphysical concepts used by many twentieth century artists. This presentation will address some psychological ways of understanding the artist’s conceptualization of her work. Applying Christopher Bollas’s concept of the “Unthought Known” to a reconstruction of Nevelson’s early biography and family history will illuminate the ways the artist described her work and the various relationships she had with the art dealers who represented her.

Laurie Wilson, Ph.D. is a psychoanalyst and art historian. She earned her undergraduate degree from Wellesley College, her Master’s degree in Fine Arts and Fine Arts Education from Columbia University, and her PhD in Art History from City University of New York. She received psychoanalytic training at The NYU Psychoanalytic Institute affiliated with the NYU Medical Center where she is currently a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry and is in private practice. She is also Professor Emerita of Art Therapy at New York University where she directed the Graduate Art Therapy Program.

Dr. Wilson’s book Alberto Giacometti: Myth, Magic and the Man was published by Yale University Press in 2003. She is currently completing a biography of the sculptor, Louise Nevelson.
