Over 2000 International Psychoanalysts Expected in Chicago for Biennial Congress Chicago –

CHICAGO (July 20, 2009) * Uniting the world*s leading psychoanalysts for the first time in the windy city, the International Psychoanalytical Association*s 46th Biennial Congress is coming to
Chicago from July 29 to August 1, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place. The introduction of the incoming IPA president, psychoanalyst, distinguished author, Professor Charles Hanly, from Toronto Canada, makes the Congress*s North American location particularly convenient for American and Canadian psychoanalysts, candidates, mental health professionals, and academics.

*This IPA Chicago Congress brings together experts from the international community to explore the root causes of human psychological suffering and its cure, as new research and clinical
findings confirm the effectiveness of psychoanalytic therapy*, says Professor Hanly. *German scientists recently reviewed 34 research studies and concluded that psychoanalytic therapy demonstrated most
effective long term treatment results* (NY Times, Oct. 1, 2008).

The 46th Congress of the IPA is a three-and-a-half-day interdisciplinary event with more than 150 sessions open to everyone interested in psychoanalysis * practitioners, students, IPA members,
and non-members. Pre-Congress events run from July 27 * 29, for small clinical working groups for IPA members and IPA candidates only.

The conference, whose theme is *Psychoanalytic Practice,* will offer a rich array of panels, some of which include:
*         Dr. David Terman, director of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis, speaking on fundamentalists

*         Marianne Leuzinger-Bohleber will be speaking on prenatal diagnosis and is also very versed on ADHD

*         Dr. Glen Gabbard of London will be speaking about the psychoanalysis of film and the world*s obsession

*         David Tuckett of London speaking on the psychoanalysis of the stock market and how to avoid financial destruction

*         Roberto Doria Medina from Argentina will speak on the new Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual

*         Antonia Ferro will speak on news in technique

The Soldier*s Project is another newsworthy panel featured at the Congress. Designed to provide easy access to mental health services to those who would ordinarily not have access to treatment, the Project
offers free, confidential, and unlimited treatment to anyone connected to the conflicts in Iraq or Afghanistan.

*Psychoanalytic practice has changed enormously in the last hundred years* said Abel Fainstein, Congress Program Committee chair. *In Chicago various ways of practicing psychoanalysis and understanding
psychoanalytic patients will be debated and discussed.*

Current IPA President, Cl*udio Laks Eizirik, will host the congress with keynote addresses by the outstanding Chilean clinician and researcher, Juan Pablo Jim*nez, on therapeutic change, by the American
master clinician, scholar and humanist Warren Poland, on psychoanalytic inquiry, and by one of Europe*s leading clinicians, the profoundly literate Italian analyst, Antonino Ferro, on clinical
strategies.

Admission to the entire Congress starts at $410 for psychoanalytic candidates in the United States who book online. One, two, and three-day tickets are also available. IPA Members receive a discount
from the non-member rate. Tickets for fulltime students/medical residents are also available online for $85 a day. To register for the Congress or learn more about the event, visit www.ipa.org.uk/congress.
