Repetitions, An Evening with Jane McAdam Freud
Join us for a screening of the film “Dead or Alive” and discussion with artist Jane McAdam Freud. A daughter of painter Lucian Freud and great-granddaughter of Sigmund Freud, Ms. Freud is a multi-disciplinary artist creating drawings & prints, sculpture & metals, film & digital media. Ms. Freud trained at the Royal College of Art, London and was awarded the British Art Metal Scholarship in Rome. She has been artist in residence at the Freud Museum in London. The film, “Dead or Alive,” as well as the exhibit and book, “Relative Relations” document the work she created during that period. After a screening of the film, Ms. Freud and Brill Library Archivist, Nellie Thompson, Ph.D., will engage in a conversation about her work and the reverberations of her residency at the Freud Museum, to be followed by a discussion with the audience.
´Dead or Alive” is a result of the artist’s residency at the Freud Museum in 2006 and 2007. The film features pairings of the artist’s sculptures with objects from Freud?s antiquities collection, as a meditation on the relation of past and present. The alternating images of these paired objects shift perspective from past to present, highlighting resonances and dissonances between them. Eventually the images merge and ‘morph” together to form a third image of a “virtual” object, distinct from either of its sources, that does not exist except as a combination of them, and which have a completely distinct aesthetic character. The film is accompanied by music composed by Kathleen Ferrier, a composer who shares Freud?s burial place at the Golders Green crematorium.
